first proper raised bed

we decided that although we’ll probably be late with this season’s sowing, we should still build vegetable beds, plant and sow them, and hope for at least some crops. our first attempt turned out to be a puny 3.5mX2m bed, so we created another one, right next to it, but a bit larger. this one is something like 3mX6m. both beds are slightly raised, with paths winding inside them. the paths are aout 20-30cm lower than the top of the beds, where the plants are sown or planted. the small slope is held with old roof tiles we had lying about.

we put quite a few species of plants into the beds.we hope at least some of them will provide us with some gifts despite being so late in the season. we’re trying our luck with potatoes, garlic, dill, brocolli, peas, beans, fava beans, radishes, pok choy, rocket, mustard, kale, beet, carrots, and a few others i’m sure i’ve forgotten :)

long overdue update: it’s been over a year since we built this bed. we’ve since built a few more beds, erected a polytunnel nursery, planted about forty trees, constructed a chicken run, and did a few things besides farming, as well.

we also made a major change to this bed, and removed all the roof tiles from the sides, after discovering that the dreaded slugs love hiding beneath them. it also has drip irrigation now (as do all our veg beds, and, of course, the trees).

also, i must apologize for being stupid and not taking any photos for a whole year. we’ll never see our first spring and summer, so to speak, but please believe me that it was green and lush. i’ll do my best to update this post with photos and info.
